Vung Tau from Ho Chi Minh City: Easy Beach Escape

by Fito October 14, 2026
by Fito October 14, 2026

If you are staying in Saigon and suddenly want sea air, seafood and a different view over your morning coffee, Vung Tau from Ho Chi Minh City is a practical escape. You can make it a day trip or stay one night without adding a domestic flight to your holiday.

Vũng Tàu is a lively coastal destination with beaches, hills and everyday Vietnamese holiday energy. Its appeal is convenience and variety. Water clarity changes, weekends get busy, and the beach beside your hotel may serve a different purpose from the one across the peninsula.

As a Vietnamese travel planner, I would choose it for an easy change of scenery, a seafood meal and time outside central Saigon. If you have one spare day, Phú Quốc does not become a day trip simply because your flight search looks optimistic.

Here is how to choose your transport, beach and pace.

Is Vung Tau Worth Visiting From Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes, if you want a convenient coastal break. A beach walk, a swim when conditions allow, lunch and a viewpoint can make a satisfying day.

Choose elsewhere if clear tropical water, snorkeling or secluded resort life is the main purpose of your holiday. Vũng Tàu works best when you judge it against the time you actually have.

Vung Tau at a Glance

QuestionPractical answer
How far from central HCMC?Roughly 100 km geographically; actual road distance depends on the route
Best trip length? One full day or two days with one night
Main beach for swimming?Back Beach, subject to daily conditions
Best waterfront for sunset?Front Beach and the west-facing coast
Transport choices?Fast ferry, private car, shared limousine or coach
Ferry duration?About two hours advertised, plus terminal transfers and boarding time
What should you eat?Bánh khọt, seafood and stingray hotpot
Quieter time to go?A non-holiday weekday

Day Trip or Overnight Stay?

A Vung Tau day trip works when you can start early and want a limited program. Keep your HCMC room, carry a small bag and organize the return journey before leaving.

One night gives you something different: sunset without watching the departure clock, an unhurried dinner and a cooler morning for walking or climbing.
My recommendation: use a day trip for a quick sea break; stay overnight when relaxation is the main objective.

How to Get From Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau

Limousine or coachIndependent travelers watching costsShared transportPickup, stops and final drop-off

High-Speed Ferry

GreenlinesDP advertises the Saigon–Vũng Tàu route with a journey of approximately two hours. Transport update, checked October 2026: the operator’s fare notice lists weekday adult tickets (age 12+) at VND 350,000 from 1 October. Confirm weekend fares and the final booking total separately. Its schedule page directs passengers to contact the company for the latest sailings. Use the official GreenlinesDP website and current schedule contact information, rather than an old screenshot.

Earlier operator information identifies Bạch Đằng in central Saigon and Hồ Mây pier at 1A Trần Phú in Vũng Tàu. Reconfirm both boarding locations with your booking, including the map pin; an office address is not necessarily the boarding point.

Before paying, ask about the outbound and return sailings, fare category, luggage, boarding deadline and cancellation terms. Add local transport at both ends. If you are prone to motion sickness, weigh the conditions against a road journey.

For a day trip, book a workable return first. Never assume there will be a ferry after sunset.

Private Car

A car suits travelers wanting pickup at their accommodation and a direct beach or hotel drop-off. For a family or small group, compare the whole vehicle quote with everyone’s return tickets and local transfers.

Ask for a journey estimate using your actual pickup point and departure time. Traffic leaving Saigon, intermediate stops and the final approach all matter; keep a generous margin around fixed commitments.

The Biên Hòa–Vũng Tàu Expressway mainline opened in May 2026, according to Vietnam News Agency reporting. Initial traffic arrangements included vehicle restrictions. This does not establish that every coach or van can use the same route today. Let the transport provider confirm current access for your vehicle.

For a return package, clarify waiting hours, sightseeing stops, tolls, parking and overtime. “Round trip” alone is not a complete description of the service.

Limousine / Coach

Shared road services are worth comparing if you want to control costs. The word “limousine” usually describes the vehicle or seating style; it does not promise private transport or pickup at every hotel.

Confirm the meeting point, number of pickups, luggage space and exact Vũng Tàu drop-off.

Motorbike

Consider this only if your licence is valid for the vehicle in Vietnam, your insurance covers the riding, and you have relevant experience. Check these requirements before renting.

Heat, rain, truck traffic and the return ride can make this tiring. Use a suitable helmet and a route permitted for motorcycles.

Back Beach or Front Beach?

Back Beach: Bãi Sau

For a beach-focused visit, start with Back Beach. It is the main practical choice for sand, beach accommodation and swimming when local conditions permit.

Ask about changing facilities, showers, shade and any rental charges before settling in. Water appearance varies with tides, weather and runoff. Follow warning flags and lifeguards, and reassess after heavy rain or rough conditions. A tourism photograph cannot tell you whether swimming is suitable today.

Front Beach: Bãi Trước

Use Front Beach for waterfront atmosphere, a walk and a west-facing sunset. It is a good evening choice for travelers who want cafés and town life nearby.

Choose your accommodation accordingly.

Other Beaches

Bãi Dứa, or Pineapple Beach, adds coastal scenery around the Small Mountain area. Bãi Dâu can suit a quieter scenic outing. Neither needs to become another compulsory stop.

AreaBest useMain consideration
Back BeachSand, beach time and swimming when suitableCrowds and changing sea conditions
Front BeachSunset and waterfront walkingDifferent experience from the main swimming beach
Pineapple BeachScenery near Small MountainSmaller coastal setting
Bãi DâuSlower coastal explorationLess convenient for a Back Beach-focused day

What to Do Besides the Beach

Christ the King Statue

The approximately 32-metre statue stands on Small Mountain. It describes around 800 steps to its base and a further internal ascent.

Treat this as a substantial climb. Bring water, wear suitable shoes and choose a cooler period within confirmed opening hours. Respect religious-site clothing and entry instructions.

Access inside the statue or to its upper viewpoints should not be assumed. If the climb is your priority on a day trip, do it first after an early arrival and shorten the beach session. Travelers with limited mobility can build a pleasant visit around waterfront stops instead.

Vung Tau Lighthouse

The lighthouse area offers an alternative viewpoint and an outing along the hillside approach. Confirm current visitor access before traveling up. Arrange your return transport too, especially if you do not want a long downhill walk.

White Palace: Bạch Dinh

White Palace, also called Villa Blanche, is a colonial-era residence associated with French administration and now presented as a heritage attraction. It suits visitors interested in architecture and history.

Check the current opening hours and ticket arrangements locally. Hòn Bà

This small offshore island can sometimes be approached over an exposed tidal path. A visible path is not a guarantee that it will remain exposed long enough for your return.

Check local access guidance, tide timing and weather before considering a crossing. Do not cross in rough conditions or race an incoming tide. Wear appropriate footwear; if uncertain, enjoy the view from shore.

Nghinh Phong Cape

The cape is an optional coastal viewpoint near the southern end of the peninsula. Keep to safe accessible areas and allow for wind and uneven ground. Add it only if it fits your chosen route.

What to Eat in Vung Tau

Bánh Khọt

These small savory rice-flour pancakes commonly come with shrimp, herbs, leaves and dipping sauce. Wrap a pancake with herbs, then dip to taste. Ask about ingredients if you avoid seafood or fish sauce; removing the visible shrimp may not address ingredients in the batter or sauce.

Seafood

Fish, squid, prawns, crab and shellfish can turn lunch into the main event. For seafood sold by weight, confirm the price unit, selected weight, cooking method and any preparation charge before cooking begins.

Stingray Hotpot

Lẩu cá đuối is a local specialty featuring stingray in a shared hotpot, often with bamboo shoots. It suits a slower meal and a group willing to try it. Fish, noodles or another hotpot are perfectly good alternatives.

The official essential Vũng Tàu guide highlights bánh khọt and stingray hotpot. Choose restaurants using current local information rather than relying on old opening hours.

A Practical Vung Tau Day Trip

Aim for beach + lunch + one main sight. This sequence assumes usable transport and normal access; adapt it to the booked return.

Part of the daySuggested plan
Early morningLeave central HCMC using a confirmed ferry or road service
After arrivalTransfer to Back Beach; walk or swim if conditions permit
LunchSeafood or bánh khọt nearby
Early afternoonChange, rest and have a drink
Remaining timeChoose White Palace or a viewpoint if opening and transfer times fit
ReturnReach the departure point before the operator’s boarding deadline

If you want the Christ statue, substitute it for the morning beach session, then have lunch and shorter beach time. Avoid leaving a long climb until you are already worrying about the return.

Sunset is an optional road-return extension, requiring a later confirmed pickup. It is not part of the default ferry itinerary. Skip the final sight if lunch runs long; the day is still a success.

A Better 2-Day / 1-Night Itinerary

Day 1: Travel, Beach and Sunset

Travel in the morning and leave your bag at the accommodation if agreed. Check-in may be later, so confirm changing facilities if you want an immediate swim.

Have lunch, spend the afternoon around Back Beach and take a proper break. Later, head to Front Beach or another suitable west-facing waterfront spot for sunset, followed by dinner.

Couples can keep the evening to a walk and a meal. Families can eat earlier and return before children are exhausted.

Day 2: Cooler Sightseeing and an Easy Return

Start with a beach walk and breakfast. Choose the Christ statue if you want the climb and access is open. Alternatively, visit the lighthouse area or White Palace.

Return to the hotel, check out and have lunch before your booked journey. Confirm luggage arrangements in advance. Solo travelers can keep the same structure using shared transport and short local rides.

Leave flexibility around the return, especially before an important onward connection. I would return to HCMC the previous day before a separate international departure.

Weekday or Weekend?

Vũng Tàu is a familiar short-break destination for Saigon residents. Weekend demand can mean fuller transport, busy restaurants and more expensive rooms.

Choose a non-holiday weekday when possible. If Saturday and Sunday are your only option, book both transport legs and accommodation before traveling.

Expect additional demand around public-holiday breaks, including Tết, 30 April–1 May and National Day. Check the actual holiday calendar for your year.

Best Time to Visit

Southern Vietnam is broadly drier around December–April and wetter around May–November; These are seasonal tendencies, not a guarantee for your dates.

Wetter months can still provide enjoyable visits. Keep the plan flexible, with cafés, meals and a suitable heritage stop available when beach weather disappoints.

Check NCHMF weather and marine warnings and operator notices shortly before departure. Sunshine above the hotel does not establish safe sea conditions. If a ferry is cancelled, road transport may be possible, but availability and cost need checking.

For a wider seasonal route, use Vietnam in December.

What to Pack

Bring swimwear, a dry change of clothes, sun protection, water, rain protection and footwear suitable for your chosen walk. Add respectful clothing for religious sites. Keep documents and valuables dry, and carry only what you need for the outing.

The Vietnam dry-season packing list covers longer trips.

Where to Stay

Back Beach: choose this area when easy beach access and a morning swim are priorities. Check the actual walking route, road crossings and recent construction or noise reports.

Front Beach and central areas: consider these for dining, waterfront evenings and sightseeing. Budget for trips to your preferred swimming beach.

Small Mountain and the coast between beaches: useful for scenery and access to selected sights. Look carefully at slopes, stairs and nearby food options.

For families, confirm room occupancy, beds and access with a stroller. A pool may provide a useful alternative, but verify its availability and supervision needs.

Compass Stay is an option for your central HCMC base, before or after the coastal visit. It is not accommodation in Vũng Tàu. See my central Saigon serviced-apartment guide and ask separately about any luggage-storage arrangement.

Vung Tau vs Mui Ne

Choose Vũng Tàu for a short escape and straightforward return to Saigon. Consider Mũi Né when you have several nights and want dunes or wind sports, highlighted in Vietnam Tourism’s Mũi Né guide.

My planning preference is one day or one night for Vũng Tàu, and two or three nights for a more worthwhile Mũi Né break.

Vung Tau vs Phu Quoc

Phú Quốc suits a dedicated island segment with several days available. Vũng Tàu suits a short coastal addition to an existing HCMC stay.

PriorityDestination to consider
One free day, no flightVũng Tàu
Easy overnight and seafoodVũng Tàu
Dunes and wind sports over several daysMũi Né
Several days of island explorationPhú Quốc

Use my Phu Quoc 4-Day Itinerary for the island option. In a seven-day South Vietnam itinerary, Vũng Tàu can replace a more complicated beach segment when you prefer fewer transfers.

Does Vung Tau Still Count as an HCMC Day Trip?

For travel planning, yes: this means a trip from central Saigon to coastal Vũng Tàu. Following the 2025 administrative reorganization, the former Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu area is part of expanded HCMC. Current wards include Vũng Tàu and Tam Thắng; see the official ward list.

Use the destination name naturally, but copy the current address from your confirmed accommodation or transport booking. The administrative change does not remove the journey.

Costs: Build Your Own Vung Tau Budget

Compare totals for your dates instead of relying on a universal daily budget.

ExpenseWhat to check
Main transportBoth directions, passenger categories or full vehicle cost
Local ridesPier or office to beach, sights and hotel
AccommodationFinal total, occupancy and cancellation terms
MealsShared seafood, drinks and cooking charges
Beach facilitiesShowers, changing, shade and rentals
AttractionsCurrent admission and any additional transport

A private car is shared by the group; ferry tickets are generally individual purchases. Confirm inclusions before comparing the two.

Common Mistakes

  1. Expecting permanently clear island-style water.
  2. Booking a hotel without checking which beach it is near.
  3. Leaving holiday-weekend transport until arrival.
  4. Planning every landmark in one day.
  5. Starting a major climb in the hottest hours.
  6. Assuming an old ferry timetable remains valid.
  7. Crossing toward Hòn Bà without a safe return window.
  8. Ordering seafood by weight without clarifying the total.

Fito’s Local Tips

  • Choose a weekday if your wider itinerary allows it.
  • Pick the beach according to what you want to do there.
  • Agree on return transport before relaxing into lunch.
  • Save the coolest hours for walking or climbing.
  • Try bánh khọt, then leave room for another meal.
  • Keep one optional stop easy to drop.
  • Spend the extra night on slower hours, not more driving.
  • Check current conditions again before leaving Saigon.
