Vietnam E-Visa Application: Step-by-Step Guide for Foreigners

by Fito September 26, 2026
by Fito September 26, 2026 10 mins read

Visa information last reviewed: 24 September 2026. Requirements can change. Check the latest Immigration instructions before applying and again before departure. This is practical travel guidance; Vietnam’s authorities decide applications and admission.

A Vietnam e-visa application can look straightforward until the form asks you to divide your passport name into separate fields, choose an entry point and decide whether one entry is enough. These are small decisions with real consequences. A beautiful itinerary will not fix a passport number entered incorrectly.

The sensible starting point is even simpler: check whether you need a visa at all. Some travelers qualify for visa-free entry; others need an e-visa or a different arrangement for their purpose of travel.

If an e-visa is appropriate, you can apply directly through Vietnam’s official Immigration portal. This guide explains what to prepare, how to work through the application, what the government fees cover and what to check before traveling. It also explains where to pause and seek official clarification instead of guessing.

Take your time with the application. Vietnam’s coffee can wait until the passport details are correct.

Sources: Vietnam Government’s e-visa overview, Immigration’s domain notice and government-hosted application instructions.

Do You Actually Need a Vietnam E-Visa?

Check your nationality, passport type, purpose of visit and intended stay before paying. Visa-exemption eligibility and e-visa eligibility answer different questions: being allowed to apply does not mean you must apply.

Check the conditions covering your exact journey, including a return to Vietnam after visiting another country. Do not copy a friend’s visa arrangements simply because you share the same flight.

Special documents, residence status and non-tourism purposes may require different guidance. Confirm uncertain cases with Vietnam Immigration or a Vietnamese diplomatic mission before committing to non-refundable travel.

What Is the Official Vietnam E-Visa Website?

The Immigration Department identifies these official application domains:

  • evisa.gov.vn
  • thithucdientu.gov.vn

Its official notice records the move to these domains on 11 November 2024. Start there for applications and result checks.

A commercial service may legitimately charge for assistance, but it is not the government portal. Search placement, a flag or the word “official” in a page title does not establish government ownership.

Vietnam E-Visa Eligibility

Vietnam’s government guidance confirms worldwide nationality eligibility. Approval remains conditional: applicants need an acceptable, valid passport and must satisfy applicable immigration requirements.

The personal application route is for foreigners outside Vietnam seeking entry. Do not treat it as an automatic in-country extension. Describe your actual purpose truthfully; an e-visa is not, by itself, permission to undertake employment.

Single Entry vs Multiple Entry

Your routeOption to consider
Enter Vietnam, travel domestically, then leaveSingle entry
Vietnam → Cambodia → VietnamMultiple entry
Vietnam → Laos → VietnamMultiple entry
Several separate arrivals during the visa’s validityMultiple entry

Domestic flights do not create another international entry. Leaving Vietnam does: a single-entry visa cannot be reused simply because its printed expiry date has not arrived.

A multiple-entry visa accommodates repeat entries within its approved validity. It does not restart a new 90-day period every time you return.

How Long Is a Vietnam E-Visa Valid?

The maximum is up to 90 days, with single- and multiple-entry options. Request dates appropriate to your plans, then use the approved document as your reference.

For example, a visa valid from 1 November to 30 November does not move its expiry to December if you arrive on 10 November. The usable period becomes shorter.

Check the Vietnamese arrival date, especially after an overnight flight. Do not schedule arrival before the visa starts or departure after the permission available to you ends. Once admitted, also check the stay information recorded by Immigration.

What You Need Before Applying

Passport

Use the passport you intend to travel with. Government-hosted application guidance advises at least six months’ validity upon arrival. Confirm the current requirement for your document and journey, particularly if expiry is close or you hold an emergency travel document.

Renewing first can prevent a mismatch later. Do not assume an approved visa transfers automatically to a replacement passport.

Portrait photo

Prepare a recent, clear, front-facing photograph against a white background, without glasses or a hat. Avoid filters and do not crop the portrait out of your passport scan.

Government-hosted instructions dated 3 November 2025 specify a 4 × 6 cm portrait in JPG/JPEG format under 2 MB. Check the live upload field before submission: these specifications were not independently confirmed on the functioning application form during this review. Do not rely on old 50 KB instructions.

Passport data-page image

Capture the entire identity page clearly, including its edges and the machine-readable lines at the bottom. Avoid glare, fingers covering text and cropped passport numbers. Zoom in before uploading: information should remain legible.

Use the current passport-upload format and size limits shown by the portal; do not assume they match the portrait field.

Travel details

Have your intended arrival and departure dates, entry and exit points, accommodation address, accessible email and payment method ready. Use genuine details. Ask your accommodation for its current address if booking platforms display inconsistent administrative names.

How to Apply for a Vietnam E-Visa Step by Step

The following is a practical workflow, not a promise that every screen will appear in this exact order. Follow current portal instructions whenever the interface differs.

Step 1 — Open the official Immigration portal

Start from one of the two official domains above. Choose the application route for an individual foreign applicant. Check the address before uploading identity documents.

Step 2 — Read current instructions

Read the eligibility, declaration and upload guidance. If a requirement is unclear, resolve it before continuing. A compulsory field is not an invitation to invent an answer.

Step 3 — Upload photo and passport page

Place each image in the correct field. Inspect the preview and any automatically extracted details. Optical recognition is useful, but you remain responsible for checking its result against your passport.

Step 4 — Enter personal details

Match your surname, given names, date of birth and nationality to your passport and the form’s instructions. Include required middle names; do not substitute a nickname.

For a single name, unusual name order, accents or transliteration, follow the portal’s passport/ICAO guidance or obtain official clarification. Do not improvise a surname to make the form accept the application.

Step 5 — Enter passport details

Check the number, issuing country, passport type and dates character by character. Compare the letter O with zero and the letter I with one. Use one passport consistently across the application and travel documents.

Step 6 — Enter contact and occupation information

Use an email you can access abroad. Provide truthful contact, occupation, accommodation and other requested information. If a question does not apply, follow its instructions rather than inserting a fictitious employer, host or address.

Step 7 — Select single or multiple entry

Review the whole regional itinerary. A short Cambodia side trip matters even if most nights are in Vietnam. Select the option matching your intended international movements.

Step 8 — Enter requested validity dates

Compare the dates with your flight itinerary in local time. Request sufficient coverage for your genuine plans within the available limits. Check the day/month/year format carefully before moving on.

Step 9 — Confirm entry information

Select the correct border gate, rather than only the nearest city name. Check any requested exit information too. Land travelers should confirm the exact crossing with their operator and the current official list.

Step 10 — Review everything

Read the completed application against your passport, one field at a time. Review dates and entry type separately. A second careful reader can spot mistakes your eyes have become accustomed to overlooking.

Step 11 — Save the registration code

Save the application number or registration code as soon as issued. Keep it with the email used for the application and a copy of your submission. Store each family member’s reference separately and securely.

Step 12 — Pay the government fee

Follow the portal’s payment process. Check the amount and selected entry type before authorizing payment, then save confirmation. If the transaction seems incomplete, check its status before paying again.

Step 13 — Track the application

Use the official portal’s application-status function and the identifiers it requests, including the application reference, email and date of birth. Monitor correction requests as well as the final result; do not rely entirely on an email arriving.

Step 14 — Download the approved visa

When the official result is available, download the e-visa. A submission confirmation or payment receipt is not an approved visa. Save the file somewhere accessible without mobile data.

Step 15 — Check all visa details

Compare the issued document with your passport and itinerary: name, passport number, nationality, birth date, validity and entry type. Resolve discrepancies before travel. Approval does not make an incorrect passport number harmless.

Step 16 — Print and prepare for travel

Print a legible copy and carry it with your passport. Keep an offline digital backup. For a family, use clearly labeled files so nobody presents another traveler’s document at check-in.

Vietnam E-Visa Fees

Application typeGovernment fee
Single entryUS$25
Multiple entryUS$50

The government’s published fees are separate from optional commercial assistance. The application fee is non-refundable if the visa is refused.

Ask any service provider to separate its charge from the government fee. Your bank may also apply conversion or transaction charges; check before payment rather than treating every advertised package price as an official visa fee.

How Long Does Processing Take?

Official application guidance uses three working days after payment and sufficient, valid information as the normal processing reference. Additional verification can take longer. It is not guaranteed approval within 72 hours.

Apply well in advance once your passport and travel dates are settled. As a planning recommendation, leave several weeks where possible, with additional room around Tet and public holidays. This is a buffer, not a separate processing promise.

Do not time a non-refundable flight around the shortest advertised turnaround. Corrections, holidays and unresolved payment issues can consume the margin you thought you had.

Vietnam E-Visa Entry Ports

Use a designated e-visa border gate. Common air-entry examples include Noi Bai for Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat for Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Cam Ranh and Phu Quoc.

Government Resolution 389/NQ-CP, reported on 3 December 2025, expanded the list to 83 gates. Consult the current list for your crossing rather than an old screenshot.

The announcement includes some airports conditionally upon operation. Listing alone is not evidence of operating passenger services. Check your actual booking and Immigration guidance.

For land crossings, distinguish road and railway gates and check the neighboring country’s requirements separately. An eligible Vietnamese exit point does not settle permission to enter Cambodia, Laos or China.

Common Vietnam E-Visa Application Mistakes

The easiest mistakes to prevent are practical ones:

  • Paying a commercial website without realizing it charges an additional service fee.
  • Reversing surname and given names or dropping a required middle name.
  • Entering one wrong passport character or using an old passport scan.
  • Uploading an unclear photograph or unreadable identity page.
  • Choosing dates that do not cover the actual arrival and departure.
  • Selecting single entry despite a planned return from another country.
  • Choosing a border gate from an outdated list.
  • Losing the registration code or assuming payment means approval.

Do a final review when you are rested. A crowded departure lounge is a poor place to discover that an application needs attention.

What If Your E-Visa Is Pending?

First, check the official status, payment record and any request for additional information. Count working days and consider Vietnamese holidays. Search your email’s spam folder too.

If clarification is needed, use the support contact displayed on the official portal. Give your application reference and a concise description of the problem. Avoid broadcasting passport images in public forums.

Do not automatically submit duplicate applications or pay an unfamiliar “urgent approval” seller. If departure is approaching, ask your airline about changing the journey while seeking official guidance. A pending application is not permission to board as an e-visa holder.

What If There Is a Mistake?

Before submission, correct it in the form. If Immigration requests amendments, follow the instructions attached to that application and recheck everything you resubmit.

After payment or approval, do not assume every field remains editable. The correct remedy depends on the error and application status; seek official guidance. A replacement application and another fee may be necessary.

Never alter the approved PDF yourself. The details must correspond to the official record, not merely look correct on a printed page.

How to Avoid Fake E-Visa Websites

Bookmark the official domain and check it before entering personal information. Similar spelling and government-style graphics are insufficient proof of authenticity. A padlock only indicates an encrypted connection.

Treat unexpected payment messages cautiously. Open the portal independently to check your case rather than following an unfamiliar email link. Never share your banking password or one-time payment code with a visa assistant.

If you choose commercial help, establish the provider’s identity, service scope, fee, privacy arrangements and refund conditions. No private provider can guarantee Immigration’s decision.

What to Do After Approval

Check the document before celebrating, then review your journey again shortly before departure. Carry the same passport used for approval and your printed visa. Airlines and Immigration may check your documents; an e-visa does not guarantee admission.

Changes need attention:

  • Different flight date: confirm the new arrival and departure remain within your permission.
  • Different airport or exit point: obtain current official guidance before assuming the change is acceptable.
  • Longer holiday: seek lawful options before your permitted stay expires.
  • Another international side trip: recheck your entry type and validity.
  • New passport: ask Immigration what is required before traveling.

On arrival, check the stay information recorded for you. Give your accommodation the details needed for temporary-residence registration, and confirm that your host handles the declaration. For wider arrival planning, see the Vietnam Travel Handbook.

Fito’s Practical Tips for a Smoother Application

  1. Decide whether you need a visa before opening a payment page.
  2. Use your physical passport as the reference, not an old booking profile.
  3. Check names and passport numbers independently of the rest of the form.
  4. Plan side trips before selecting your entry type.
  5. Keep every traveler’s application reference in a separate, clearly named file.
  6. Leave time for questions and corrections.
  7. Ask your accommodation for its complete current address.
  8. Inspect the issued visa, then print it and save an offline copy.

FAQ

Who can apply for a Vietnam e-visa?

Citizens of all countries and territories may apply, subject to the passport, location and immigration conditions for the application route. Eligibility to submit is not approval.

How long can I stay with an e-visa?

Use the approved validity dates and the stay permission recorded on entry. The maximum framework is up to 90 days, not an automatic fresh 90 days after any arrival.

Do children need their own application?

Check each child’s visa requirement independently. Do not assume a parent’s visa covers them. The official form’s accompanying-child category concerns children under 14 included in the parent’s passport; seek current guidance for that situation. A child traveling on a separate passport needs their own applicable entry permission.

Do I need a booked flight before applying?

Prepare a realistic route and dates, and follow the current form’s document requirements. This review could not verify the live form’s attachment fields. Check those before buying a non-refundable ticket solely for the application.

Can I change my entry airport?

Ask Immigration about your specific change. Do not assume either that every eligible airport is interchangeable or that a new application is always required.

Can I get an urgent Vietnam e-visa?

Do not interpret a commercial urgency claim as an official guarantee. Check current options directly with Immigration. No guaranteed expedited service was verified for this guide.

Do I need to print my e-visa?

Yes. Follow official guidance to print the approved document, and keep an offline digital copy as backup. A payment screenshot does not replace it.

Can my application be refused?

Yes. Inaccurate information, unsuitable documentation or failure to satisfy immigration conditions can prevent approval. The government fee is not refunded when an application is refused.

Does an e-visa let me work in Vietnam?

Do not assume so. Entry permission and employment authorization are different matters. Obtain guidance appropriate to your actual activity before applying or starting work.

Can Fito guarantee approval?

No. Fito can help travelers review preparation and application details, but Immigration controls approval, timing and admission. Assistance fees should be explained separately from government charges.

Final Vietnam E-Visa Checklist

  • I checked whether visa-free entry applies to my journey.
  • I used the official portal or knowingly selected a commercial assistant.
  • My images and passport details match the current requirements.
  • My requested dates and entry type fit my itinerary.
  • My entry and exit arrangements have been checked.
  • I saved my application reference and payment record.
  • I downloaded and checked the approved visa.
  • I have the correct passport, printed visa and offline backup.

Apply Carefully, Then Check Everything Again

A successful Vietnam e-visa application starts with accurate information and enough time to address questions. Establish the right entry arrangement, use official instructions and compare the final document with your passport before traveling.

Need Help With Your Application?

If the form, passport details or itinerary leave you uncertain, contact Fito about practical application assistance. Fito can help review your preparation, clarify the steps and identify questions to raise with Immigration. The aim is a carefully prepared application; the authorities retain control of the decision.
