7 Days in South Vietnam: Saigon, Mekong & Beach Itinerary

by Fito October 2, 2026
by Fito October 2, 2026

Seven days sounds generous until your wish list includes Saigon, Củ Chi, the Mekong Delta, Đà Lạt, Mũi Né, Phú Quốc and Côn Đảo. The solution is to stop adding destinations. A good South Vietnam itinerary for 7 days needs enough time for meals, conversations and a swim that is not squeezed between transfers.

My recommended route is Ho Chi Minh City → the Ben Tre area → Can Tho → Phú Quốc. It gives you three contrasting travel zones: city, countryside and coast. Stay two nights in Saigon, one in Can Tho and three on Phú Quốc, with an adjustment if your flight home requires a final night back in the city.

The important planning decision is how to reach the island from Can Tho. Confirm that connection before committing to hotels; do not assume a direct flight operates on your date.

Below is the full route, including what to skip, where to stay, realistic transfer expectations and when Mũi Né makes a better beach choice.

Is 7 Days Enough for South Vietnam?

Yes, for a focused introduction. You can experience Southern city life, spend a night in the Delta and enjoy one beach destination. You cannot comfortably include every Southern highlight.

This is a moderately active week, with two substantial travel days. It works best if you accept those days and protect the slower beach finish. If you dislike frequent transfers, choose Ho Chi Minh City plus either the Delta or a beach.

7Phú QuốcLight morning and departure—

Before booking: Day 4 requires a confirmed flight or coordinated road-and-ferry connection. If you must depart internationally from Ho Chi Minh City on a separate ticket, consider returning there on Day 6 instead. That leaves two island nights and a final city night.

Day 1: Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City and Take It Slowly

Ho Chi Minh City is the official name; Saigon remains widely used in conversation and travel, especially for the central city’s character. You will hear both.

After arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport, transfer to your accommodation and see how you feel. A late arrival needs little more than dinner. With an afternoon available, take a short walk around Nguyễn Huệ or nearby historic streets, then stop for coffee.

For your first meal, choose cơm tấm—broken rice with your preferred accompaniments—or hủ tiếu noodles near your accommodation. You do not need to cross the city to find a famous bánh mì after a long flight.

Arrange a pickup if a predictable meeting point would help, particularly with children or substantial luggage. Otherwise, use an established taxi service or the designated pickup process for your ride-hailing booking. Allow for traffic rather than scheduling a timed attraction immediately after landing.

Day 2: History, Food and Local Saigon

Choose the War Remnants Museum or Independence Palace as your main morning visit. History enthusiasts can consider both, but leave space to absorb what you see. The museum’s subject matter can be emotionally demanding.

Have lunch and a café break before choosing an afternoon direction:

  • Chợ Lớn: Explore Chinese-Vietnamese heritage, a temple and surrounding food streets with a guide or a carefully planned short walk.
  • Central neighborhoods: Stay closer to your base for cafés, markets and everyday street life.
  • More history: Add another museum instead of a distant neighborhood excursion.

Saigon’s heat, traffic and broken-up pavements make continuous sightseeing tiring. Use short vehicle trips where useful, then walk within a chosen area. Do not treat every landmark pin as part of one pedestrian route.

In the evening, try bánh xèo or join a food walk. Tell a guide about dietary restrictions before booking; fish sauce, stock and toppings may matter as much as the dish’s main ingredient.

Day 3: Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre and Can Tho

Leave early for the Ben Tre area, known for coconut-growing landscapes and waterways. Allow roughly 2–3 hours to reach your starting point from central Saigon, with extra time for traffic and remote pickup locations. This is a planning allowance, not a transfer guarantee.

Choose a compact countryside program: a boat journey, a village walk or short bicycle ride, and lunch. Add a workshop only if it interests you. Coconut-candy and craft demonstrations often serve tourists; they can still be worthwhile when the explanation is good and there is no pressure to buy.

Continue to Can Tho in the afternoon. Budget around three further road hours, depending on your departure point and traffic. Local transport guidance also puts the Ben Tre–Can Tho bus journey around three hours; station transfers are additional.

This is the busiest day. A pre-arranged through-transfer or small-group tour with a Can Tho finish makes it simpler. Confirm that a group tour does not return you to Saigon. If organizing everything by public transport, consider skipping the Ben Tre stop and spending longer around Can Tho instead.

Check in, have dinner and get an early night.

Place-name note: Ben Tre remains a useful travel name, although the former province is now part of enlarged Vĩnh Long Province. Can Tho’s administrative area also expanded in 2025. Use the accommodation’s current address and map pin. Official restructuring source.

Day 4: Can Tho Morning and Travel to Phú Quốc

Start Early, With Realistic Market Expectations

Arrange a short river trip around first light if your onward connection allows. Can Tho’s tourism portal recommends visiting Cai Rang Floating Market between approximately 5 and 8 a.m.. Your hotel and boat operator should agree on the meeting point, return time and luggage arrangements the evening before.

Cai Rang is a changing commercial and tourism environment, not an unchanged historical scene. Do not expect a guaranteed number of trading boats. Look for produce handling, boats supplying other boats and morning routines; have breakfast on the water if available and suitable.

Skip extra canal or workshop stops if they threaten the transfer. The river morning and island journey are already enough.

How to Reach Phú Quốc From Can Tho

Transport checked: 29 September 2026. Vietnam Airlines publishes a Can Tho–Phú Quốc fare page, but its public listings do not establish a usable nonstop flight for every date. A dependable direct service could not be confirmed for this evergreen itinerary. Check the actual flight number, stops and operating date before choosing it.

Use one of these arrangements:

  1. A confirmed nonstop flight, if available on your date. Work backward from airport check-in requirements. Shorten or remove the market visit if necessary.
  2. Road to Rạch Giá, then ferry to Phú Quốc. Allow approximately three hours for the intercity road journey, plus pickup and terminal transfers. The sea crossing is around 2½ hours, before the island-to-hotel transfer. Check the current Phú Quốc Express schedule; the operator requests arrival at the port 45 minutes before departure.
  3. Road back toward Ho Chi Minh City, then fly. This is a fallback involving backtracking. Treat it as a substantial travel day and leave generous road-to-airport margin. An overnight in the city may be necessary, reducing island time.

For the ferry option, book the road and sea segments together in your planning. An afternoon sailing may fit a short dawn visit; a morning-only sailing may not. If the timetable fails, revise the trip rather than relying on the driver to recover lost time. Ferries remain subject to marine conditions and cancellations.

Day 5: Phú Quốc Beach Day

After the Delta transfers, leave this day deliberately light. Start with the beach near your accommodation, rather than driving across the island because another beach appeared in a photograph.

Long Beach can suit travelers wanting a west-coast base and sunset opportunities. Sao Beach may interest those exploring the south, but evaluate the day’s conditions and travel time. Beaches differ in access, surrounding development, maintenance and exposure to wind.

Ask your accommodation where swimming is suitable that day. Follow flags and local advice; clear skies do not guarantee calm water.

If snorkeling is a priority, choose one reputable boat excursion instead of the beach day. Check its actual stops, group size, safety arrangements and cancellation policy. Do not book a tour simply because it lists the largest number of islands.

Day 6: Explore Phú Quốc Your Way

Choose the version that matches your interests:

  • Food and culture: Visit a fish-sauce producer or pepper farm, then have a seafood meal. Confirm visitor access in advance.
  • Nature: Arrange a suitable guided forest outing or marine excursion when conditions permit.
  • Families: Balance one chosen attraction with pool or beach time. Consider journey length from your hotel before buying tickets.
  • Rest: Stay close to your base and enjoy another unhurried day.

Flying home from SGN tomorrow on a separate ticket? Use today to return to Ho Chi Minh City and sleep there. That buffer changes the beach segment, but is preferable to building an expensive international departure around a tight domestic connection.

Day 7: Final Morning and Departure

If departing from Phú Quốc, keep the morning close to your accommodation: breakfast, coffee and a final swim if time permits. Avoid boat excursions before a flight.

An open-jaw journey—arriving in Ho Chi Minh City and leaving onward from Phú Quốc—can reduce backtracking when an appropriate flight exists. Check the full ticketed routing; an international airport does not imply a direct connection to your home city.

If already back in Saigon, enjoy a relaxed breakfast and leave ample time for the airport. Follow your airline’s check-in guidance and confirm the terminal. There is no universal safe connection time without knowing the tickets, baggage and transfer arrangements.

Phú Quốc or Mũi Né for a 7-Day South Vietnam Trip?

Choose Phú Quốc for an island finish, especially during favorable dry-season conditions. Choose Mũi Né for a mainland coast, dunes or wind sports, accepting that avoiding a flight does not eliminate a lengthy transfer.

ActivitiesSnorkeling, boats, food and forestDunes, coastal visits and kite/wind sports
Route trade-offIsland logistics need coordinationDelta-to-coast route involves backtracking
Best fitTravelers prioritizing island timeTravelers preferring mainland travel

A Practical Mũi Né Alternative

Use Days 1–2 in Saigon, Day 3 for the Delta and an overnight, then return to Saigon on Day 4 after an early river visit. Travel to Mũi Né on Day 5, stay two nights and return on Day 7.

That provides only one full coastal day and suits a late departure or an additional final city night. For an early Day 7 flight, return on Day 6; alternatively, shorten the Delta to a day trip so you can reach the coast earlier. This is the real trade-off behind a “no extra flight” plan.

Do not include Phú Quốc and Mũi Né together in this week.

Best Time for This South Vietnam Itinerary

Approximately November–April is a useful broad planning window for the main route, as identified by Vietnam Tourism’s Southern itinerary. Phú Quốc’s seasonal boundaries vary between sources and years; think of a generally favorable period rather than an exact annual switch.

Late dry-season heat can make city walking tiring. Holiday dates can also increase demand for flights and particular resort rooms.

Wet-season travel remains possible. Saigon and the Delta may have substantial dry periods between tropical downpours, but sustained rain and rough seas can affect the island segment. Keep boat activities flexible and choose accommodation you would enjoy during a wet afternoon.

Mũi Né’s wind-sport appeal is not the same as calm swimming. For December travel, read Vietnam in December: Weather, Beaches & Best Destinations alongside the latest NCHMF forecasts. Decide on the route using seasonal patterns, then adjust activities with the short-range forecast.

Getting Around on a 7-Day South Vietnam Trip

SegmentSensible approachPlanning allowance or caveat
Saigon sightseeingWalking within areas, taxis or ride-hailing between themHeat and traffic make distance misleading
HCMC → Ben TreThrough-transfer or coordinated tourRoughly 2–3 road hours; confirm your pickup
Ben Tre → Can ThoSame vehicle, arranged car or public busAround 3 road hours, excluding stops
Can Tho → Phú QuốcConfirmed flight or road plus ferryMost of Day 4; no assumed daily nonstop
HCMC → Mũi NéCar/coach; rail if the timetable suitsAllow roughly half a day door to door
Island travelHotel transfer, taxi or available ride serviceCheck return pickup in quieter areas

These are working allowances, not promises. Vietnam Tourism’s family guidance describes the Mũi Né drive at around four hours; pickup location, road conditions and hotel location can change that.

For rail alternatives, check Vietnam Railways for the actual destination station and operating date, then arrange the final road transfer. Do not assume the train leaves you at your beach hotel.

A private car is particularly helpful on Day 3 because luggage, a countryside stop and an onward hotel must line up. Shared tours and public transport can cost less. Ask Fito about a tailored transfer if useful, but compare inclusions and alternatives fairly.

Do not rent a motorbike solely because island roads look quieter. You still need appropriate licensing, insurance, experience and a helmet. Taxis and arranged transfers are valid choices.

Where to Stay During This South Vietnam Itinerary

Ho Chi Minh City

For two nights, prioritize central food access, straightforward pickup and a quiet room. The Bến Thành vicinity, historic center and Cô Giang/Cầu Ông Lãnh area offer different balances of sightseeing, everyday dining and traffic.

“District 1” remains useful search language, but administration changed in 2025. Use current ward details and the property’s map pin when arranging transport.

Compass Stay is one central serviced-apartment option for couples, families or small groups wanting living space and useful household facilities. Confirm the specific unit’s layout and amenities. Travelers wanting included breakfast, a pool or a staffed front desk may prefer a hotel. Compare both in Serviced Apartment vs Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City.

Can Tho

Stay near the central riverfront for an easy evening and convenient pickup, or choose a quieter lodge if its transfer arrangements fit. For one night, proximity to the confirmed boat departure matters more than collecting resort facilities you will not use.

Ask about early checkout, breakfast and luggage storage. Confirm where the boat returns, not only where it departs.

Phú Quốc

Choose one base for all island nights. Dương Đông/Long Beach can suit visitors who value dining access; quieter beach areas suit those happy to rely more on hotel facilities and transfers.

Check whether beachfront means usable direct beach access, whether nearby construction is reported and how far the hotel is from your planned activities. A cheaper remote room can create a larger transport bill.

What to Eat in South Vietnam

Build food into each day rather than chasing a separate checklist. In Saigon, alternate cơm tấm, hủ tiếu, bánh mì and bánh xèo instead of ordering everything in one sitting. Coffee stops also create useful breaks from the heat.

In the Delta, ask for a regional family-style lunch with local vegetables, fish or suitable alternatives, followed by seasonal fruit. At Can Tho, a simple noodle breakfast can be more rewarding than another souvenir stop.

On Phú Quốc, explore seafood, pepper and fish-sauce traditions. Confirm the price basis when selecting seafood—per portion, weight or whole item—and tell staff about allergies before ordering.

How Much Does 7 Days in South Vietnam Cost?

There is no useful universal total without travel dates, party size and room preferences. Price the week in this order:

  1. Arrival and departure flights, including any island-to-Saigon return.
  2. Six nights of accommodation: two city, one Delta and three island nights, or the adjusted final-city-night version.
  3. Day 3 transport and experiences: check whether guide, boat, lunch and hotel are included.
  4. Day 4 connection: include road transfers, baggage, port or airport access and island pickup.
  5. Meals, local rides, entry tickets and optional activities.

Public transport and simple rooms suit a budget version, particularly if you simplify Day 3. A mid-range traveler might combine comfortable accommodation with a coordinated Delta transfer. Higher-end spending often concentrates on the island resort and private excursions.

Phú Quốc is not universally expensive, but resort choice and holiday dates can change the total substantially. Compare refundable terms and avoid counting an included boat trip twice when reviewing packages.

Should You Add Củ Chi or Đà Lạt?

Củ Chi: Include it if war history is a major priority. Replace much of Day 2’s program with the excursion and keep the remaining city time light. Confirm the actual pickup-to-return duration; this is not a quick central attraction.

Đà Lạt: Leave it out of this seven-day route. I would allocate it two or three days plus travel, usually within a longer Southern trip. Adding highlands after the Delta and before the island makes the week much less restful.

Côn Đảo can replace Phú Quốc for nature and history, subject to transport and season. Vũng Tàu is another option for a shorter mainland coastal escape. Neither needs to become an additional stop.

Common South Vietnam Itinerary Mistakes

  • Treating seven destinations as seven days of sightseeing.
  • Buying an island hotel before checking the Day 4 connection.
  • Assuming a route-marketing page proves a daily nonstop flight.
  • Booking a Ben Tre tour that returns to Saigon when your hotel is in Can Tho.
  • Combining every city landmark with Củ Chi on the same day.
  • Expecting Cai Rang to reproduce an old photograph.
  • Spending only one beach night after a complicated island transfer.
  • Ignoring marine weather because the city forecast looks sunny.
  • Using a tight separate-ticket connection for the flight home.

Who Should Change This Route?

Families with small children and slower travelers may prefer Saigon plus Phú Quốc, adding a nearby Delta day trip only if wanted. Food-focused travelers can give more time to Saigon and Can Tho and shorten the resort stay.

For a public-transport-focused trip, going straight from Saigon to Can Tho reduces coordination. For dunes and wind sports, use Mũi Né as the beach choice. If you have two weeks instead, the Vietnam 2 Week Itinerary explains a broader route.

Fito’s Local Tips for a Better Week

  1. Give Saigon one full day after arrival before moving on.
  2. Book the difficult connection first, then fit hotels around it.
  3. Use Ben Tre for countryside and Can Tho for river-city life.
  4. Tell each driver or guide your next confirmed appointment.
  5. Keep the Day 4 morning short enough to protect the transfer.
  6. Leave an island afternoon empty; you came for a holiday.
  7. Eat locally at each stop rather than repeating the same dishes.
  8. Return to the mainland early enough to protect your flight home.

Pack light: breathable clothing, walking shoes, sandals, swimwear, sun protection, insect repellent and a light rain layer cover most needs. Keep documents and electronics dry on boats, and check airline rules for baggage and power banks.

Before booking non-refundable travel, confirm passport and visa requirements for your nationality and route. See the Vietnam E-Visa Application Guide; domestic travel between these stops does not constitute another international entry.

FAQ

Is seven days enough for South Vietnam?

Yes, for Saigon, one Delta overnight and one beach. Reduce the route if transfers feel like work rather than part of the experience.

How many days should I spend in Ho Chi Minh City?

This route gives you an arrival day and one full day. Add another city day by shortening the beach stay if food, neighborhoods or history are your priority.

Is an overnight Mekong stay worthwhile?

Yes. It avoids returning to Saigon immediately and makes early river activity practical. Choose the overnight location around what you actually want to experience.

Can I travel from Can Tho to Phú Quốc?

Yes, with a suitable confirmed connection. Road plus ferry is an option; a direct flight must be verified for the exact date. Do not assume there is a ferry departing from central Can Tho itself.

Is Phú Quốc or Mũi Né better?

Phú Quốc suits island and swimming priorities in favorable weather. Mũi Né suits mainland travel, dunes and wind sports, but reaching it from the Delta still takes time.

What is the best season for this route?

The broad November–April window usually favors the city–Delta–Phú Quốc combination. Check your month and current marine conditions, especially around seasonal transitions.

Can I include both Củ Chi and Đà Lạt?

Not comfortably alongside all the core stops. Replace city activities for Củ Chi; give Đà Lạt a separate allocation or extend the trip.

Where should I fly home from?

Phú Quốc works if suitable onward flights are available. For a separate international ticket from Ho Chi Minh City, consider returning the previous day.

Is One Week in South Vietnam Enough?

A South Vietnam itinerary for 7 days can deliver three distinct experiences: Saigon’s city life, the Delta’s waterways and a slower beach finish. Its success depends on choosing workable connections and leaving other destinations for another trip.

If your dates, beach preference or onward flight do not fit this version, Fito can help design a Southern Vietnam route around your pace, budget and transport options. The goal is enough time to enjoy each stop, with fewer hours spent wondering how to reach the next one.
