Vietnam 10-Day Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

by Fito November 4, 2026
by Fito November 4, 2026

Ten days gives you enough time to meet several sides of Vietnam: a Hanoi breakfast counter, limestone countryside, Hoi An after dark, Saigon street life and a boat journey through coconut country. The challenge is choosing a route that leaves time to enjoy them.

My recommended Vietnam 10-day itinerary is Hanoi → Ninh Binh day trip → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City → Mekong Delta day trip. It uses three accommodation bases, two domestic flights and nine nights: three in Hanoi, two in Hoi An and four in Ho Chi Minh City.

A successful first trip depends as much on what you leave out as what you include. This route gives each region a purpose while protecting your arrival, transfer and departure days.

Is 10 Days Enough for Vietnam?

Yes—for a varied introduction, provided those are ten calendar days in Vietnam, including arrival and departure. If your holiday allowance also includes long international flights, count your actual nights before booking this plan.

This is a moderately paced trip, not slow travel. You will have only one completely free-standing sightseeing day in Hoi An, and both countryside excursions involve driving. Remove one or both day trips if you want later mornings and more unplanned time.

Seven days suits a more focused regional holiday. Fourteen days creates space for an overnight countryside stay, Hue or a beach section. See the two-week Vietnam itinerary if your dates are flexible.

Why This Route Works

The journey moves from North to Central to South without a return flight across the country. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City receive actual city time; they are more than airport stops. Ninh Binh and the Mekong provide different countryside experiences while your luggage stays at your hotel.

Vietnam Tourism’s official ten-day highlights route includes Ha Long and Hue as well as Hoi An and the South. This version deliberately uses fewer overnight stops. That is a pacing choice, not a judgment about which destinations deserve attention.

North to South or South to North?

Either direction works. Start with an open-jaw flight search: arrive in Hanoi and leave from the Ho Chi Minh City region, or reverse it. Compare the whole journey cost, including baggage and any domestic repositioning flight.

North to south gives a clear progression through this itinerary. Reverse it if international fares, weather or holiday dates make that more sensible. Keep the same protected transfer days and nine-night total.

If a return ticket requires departure from Hanoi, allow a proper buffer after returning north. An apparently cheaper international fare may cost another domestic flight and a useful holiday day.

Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi

Noi Bai Airport is outside the center. Immigration, baggage, the road journey and check-in can occupy much of your arrival day. Use an official taxi, ride-hailing pickup or a pre-booked transfer with a clear meeting point.

After resting, walk around Hoan Kiem Lake and a small part of the Old Quarter. Choose a nearby dinner rather than crossing the city to chase a famous restaurant. Pho or a simple rice meal is enough for your first evening.

If you arrive early after an overnight flight, confirm early check-in beforehand; a morning arrival does not automatically mean a room is ready. If you arrive late, dinner and sleep are the itinerary. Nothing essential depends on sightseeing today.

Day 2: Hanoi History, Food & Local Life

Give Hanoi two or three meaningful stops. Start with the Temple of Literature, then choose a museum or historical site that interests you. Hoa Lo offers a different experience from the Museum of Ethnology; choose according to your interests and the travel involved rather than fitting both into a checklist.

Have bun cha for lunch, then reserve time for a neighborhood walk and a café. Egg coffee can become a welcome seated break instead of another item consumed while rushing elsewhere. Banh cuon is another good breakfast or light-meal choice.

Check opening arrangements for your actual weekday, particularly if changing the plan to include the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex. Keep the evening near your accommodation before tomorrow’s early start.

The Hanoi three-day itinerary provides more choices; borrow selectively rather than trying to compress all three days into one.

Day 3: Ninh Binh Day Trip

Leave Hanoi in the morning and return to the same hotel tonight. Vietnam Tourism describes Ninh Binh as roughly two hours from Hanoi by road or train, but your actual attraction transfer can take longer with hotel pickups and traffic.

Choose Trang An plus Hoa Lu, Trang An plus Hang Mua, or Tam Coc plus a relaxed countryside cycle. One boat experience and one complementary activity make a satisfying day. You do not need both major boat routes.

Hang Mua involves a steep climb; choose a gentler alternative if steps, heat or slippery conditions are a concern. Ask about boat boarding and seating if mobility is limited. Lunch can introduce regional goat dishes or crispy rice, with alternatives agreed for dietary needs.

Compare tours by time at the main sights, group size and pickup arrangements. More stops can mean less time enjoying each. For a deeper stay, read the Ninh Binh planning guide.

Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay?

Ninh Binh is my default here because returning to Hanoi simplifies the next day. Ha Long may be the right choice if sleeping on the bay is a central reason for your trip.

DecisionNinh Binh day tripHa Long overnight cruise
Main experienceInland karsts, waterways and countrysideSeascape, time aboard and overnight atmosphere
AccommodationKeep your Hanoi roomReplace the third Hanoi night with a cabin
Day 4 impactLeave directly from Hanoi for your flightDisembark, transfer and connect onward
Best fitSimpler logistics and land-based varietyTravelers who especially want a bay cruise
Main cautionAvoid an overloaded excursionAvoid a tight cruise-to-flight connection

For the cruise alternative, use Day 3 for embarkation and Day 4 for the return and onward journey. Obtain the actual disembarkation time, arrival pier and airport transfer plan before booking a flight. Weather and road delays need room in that connection.

If a comfortable connection is unavailable, change the wider itinerary or add time. Do not preserve the original table by buying an unrealistic flight. Including both Ninh Binh and Ha Long would require giving up another day elsewhere.

Day 4: Fly to Hoi An

Fly from Hanoi to Da Nang, then continue by road to Hoi An. Vietnam Tourism’s Hoi An guide gives approximately 50 minutes from Da Nang Airport to the Ancient Town; treat that as a typical estimate, not a pickup guarantee.

A mid-morning flight can be worth a higher fare if it avoids a very early alarm. Include checkout, the Hanoi airport transfer, check-in, baggage collection and the Hoi An drive when planning your day.

Check in, rest, then enjoy a short Old Town walk and dinner. The riverside after dark is enough. Leave My Son, cooking classes and countryside excursions for a day when you have more than the hours remaining after a flight.

Day 5: Hoi An Old Town, Food & Countryside

Explore the Ancient Town early. Select a merchant house or assembly hall, see the Japanese Bridge area and leave time to notice the streets between the sights. Confirm current heritage-ticket arrangements locally.

Try cao lau or white rose dumplings, then choose one afternoon direction: countryside around Tra Que or Cam Thanh, An Bang Beach when conditions suit, or a history-focused visit to My Son. If My Son is your priority, consider visiting early and moving the Old Town walk later instead.

Hoi An’s tourism guidance identifies October–January as a rainier, storm-sensitive period. During wet weather, favor food and heritage activities where access remains safe; a beach afternoon should be optional.

Two nights also make ambitious tailoring orders awkward. Ask about fittings and completion before paying, and do not sacrifice your only full day to repeated appointments unless that is what you came for.

Should You Add Hue?

Usually not to this exact route. Hue deserves time for imperial heritage, and adding another hotel reduces the breathing room elsewhere.

History-first visitors can replace Hoi An with Hue. Rebuild the flights and transfers around Hue’s airport or a suitable Da Nang connection; do not simply insert a long road excursion between unchanged flights.

Similarly, choose Da Nang instead of Hoi An if a modern city and beach base suit you better. For two Central Vietnam nights, splitting accommodation between the two creates extra packing for little benefit.

Day 6: Fly to Ho Chi Minh City

Return to Da Nang Airport and fly south. Confirm the destination airport on your particular ticket: HCMC-region airport operations are entering a transition, explained below.

After the airport transfer and check-in, keep the evening gentle. Have coffee, take a short Nguyen Hue walk or find dinner around Co Giang and Co Bac if convenient to your accommodation.

This is also a useful laundry evening. Four nights in one base let you unpack properly and arrange clean clothes without carrying a separate outfit for every day. Leave the Mekong and major museums for later.

Day 7: Understand Saigon Before Leaving It Again

Start with the Independence Palace, also called the Reunification Palace, and consider the War Remnants Museum. Both deserve attention; if you prefer a slower visit, choose one rather than rushing through two substantial historical sites.

Some museum exhibits are emotionally difficult. Leave time to process what you see, especially when traveling with children.

After lunch, take a café or hotel break. In the late afternoon choose central architecture around the Post Office and nearby streets, or a Cho Lon neighborhood visit. These are different outings, not adjacent checklist items.

Finish with com tam, hu tieu or another local dinner. A rooftop drink is optional. For a broader introduction, use the first-time Ho Chi Minh City guide to select experiences that fit your interests.

Day 8: Mekong Delta Day Trip

Choose a Ben Tre-style countryside excursion. Vietnam Tourism’s Mekong itinerary describes Ben Tre as approximately two hours from Ho Chi Minh City; the actual journey depends on your pickup, destination and traffic.

Look for a riverboat journey, a smaller waterway where appropriate, a walk or cycle, lunch and one worthwhile local production visit. Ask how much time is spent traveling, shopping and exploring. Ten demonstrations are not necessarily better than one unhurried conversation.

Request suitable life jackets, clarify boarding arrangements and agree on a non-cycling option if needed. Return to your HCMC accommodation for an easy evening.

This is an introduction to one part of a large region. It does not include Cai Rang sunrise. Travelers prioritizing that market should replace Days 8–9 with an overnight Can Tho trip: sleep there on Day 8, explore early on Day 9 and return to HCMC for the final night. That adds a fourth base and changes HCMC to three nights. See the Cai Rang Floating Market guide.

Day 9: Choose Your Own Saigon

Keep today flexible until you know your energy level. Revisit a neighborhood, take a food-focused outing, shop slowly or spend a long lunch discussing what you have seen.

Cu Chi is an option for travelers particularly interested in wartime history. Treat it as a substantial excursion with road travel, not something to squeeze between several city attractions. Ask about the physical demands and alternatives to entering tunnels.

You may also need today because weather changed your Mekong plans or a museum was closed. A buffer day is useful even when nothing goes wrong: it gives you permission to follow an unexpected interest.

Day 10: Departure Without a Final-Day Rush

Breakfast, coffee and a short local walk may fit if your flight leaves later. Keep your luggage arrangements and airport pickup confirmed before going out.

Do not schedule Cu Chi, the Mekong or Vung Tau before an international departure. Checkout, traffic, the correct airport and terminal, airline check-in and immigration all need time. Use your airline’s arrival guidance and a transfer estimate for the actual airport—not a remembered journey to a different one.

What I Would Leave Out of a 10-Day Trip

Sa Pa, Ha Giang, Da Lat, Nha Trang and Vung Tau are worthwhile destinations. They simply compete with experiences already occupying these ten days.

For Sa Pa, allocate two or three nights and remove another region or significant section. For Ha Giang, design a mountain-centered holiday with several days for the journey; a rushed two-day loop is not a useful addition here. Da Lat deserves its own two- or three-day allocation, while Nha Trang works better as a deliberate beach section.

If mountains matter more than national coverage, a focused northern trip may satisfy you more than this route. You do not need to visit all three regions to have a successful first Vietnam holiday.

Can You Add Phu Quoc?

Yes, by replacing a substantial section. One night between flights is a poor return on the extra travel.

A clearer beach-first alternative is Hanoi three nights → HCMC three nights → Phu Quoc three nights, dropping Hoi An and adjusting excursions. Confirm a workable onward departure from the island; if you must return to the mainland, allow enough connection time or move your final overnight accordingly.

Use the Phu Quoc four-day itinerary to judge whether the island deserves priority over another region.

How to Travel Between Destinations

LegDefault transportPlanning consideration
Hanoi arrivalAirport road transferAllow for immigration, baggage and room availability
Hanoi–Ninh Binh–HanoiDay-tour vehicle or arranged transportCompare actual pickup and attraction timings
Hanoi–Da Nang–Hoi AnFlight plus road transferProtect most of Day 4 for movement
Hoi An–Da Nang–HCMC regionRoad transfer plus flightCheck the arrival airport and baggage allowance
HCMC–Ben Tre area–HCMCRoad and boat excursionKeep the evening uncommitted
HCMC departureTransfer to ticketed airportReconfirm terminal and pickup time

Compare flights using the final fare, including checked bags and any necessary changes. A short flight still consumes hours door to door. Avoid choosing an awkward departure solely because the initial fare looks cheaper.

Rail remains a valid choice if the journey is part of your holiday. Long overnight legs affect sleep and the following day’s energy, so this particular three-region plan favors flying. If you prefer trains, reduce the route or add days; the Vietnam train travel guide helps with that decision.

Where to Stay

Hanoi: Three Nights

The Old Quarter suits food and walking, but street noise varies sharply. Read room-specific reviews and ask about lift access. The Hoan Kiem edges and French Quarter provide other central options. Prioritize a comfortable room over saving a little money far from your intended walks.

Hoi An: Two Nights

The Ancient Town edge is convenient for this short stay. An Bang suits beach priorities when weather cooperates; countryside accommodation suits travelers happy to arrange rides. Check how you will return after dinner, particularly during rain.

Ho Chi Minh City: Four Nights

Look around Ben Thanh, the historic core in Sai Gon Ward, or the Cau Ong Lanh/Co Giang area according to your interests. Travelers may recognize much of this central area by the legacy label District 1. Confirm the current address and pickup pin with your host.

For families and small groups, Compass Stay, Fito’s accommodation offering, may be worth considering for apartment-style space and laundry. Confirm the particular unit’s bedrooms, bathroom count, kitchenette, washer and check-in arrangements before booking. Travelers wanting hotel breakfast, a staffed reception or two bathrooms should compare carefully.

Read serviced apartment versus hotel and the two-bedroom apartment guide before choosing.

When Is the Best Time for This Route?

There is no perfect national month. The broad patterns in Vietnam Tourism’s climate guide support these planning choices:

PeriodWhat to plan around
December–FebruaryCooler northern weather, generally drier southern conditions and variable Central weather
March–AprilOften a useful nationwide compromise; heat increases
May–AugustHeat, regional rain differences and a need for shaded breaks
September–NovemberNorthern autumn appeal, with greater Central storm and rain concerns

Poor Central conditions may justify removing Hoi An and reallocating its nights north or south. Northern cold or fog changes outdoor expectations; southern showers call for flexible excursion timing. Serious weather alerts override the itinerary.

For winter planning, see Vietnam in December and the companion Vietnam in January guide. If dates overlap Tet, consult the Traveling Vietnam During Tet guide before booking: reduce unnecessary moves around Tet Eve, the first day and peak travel dates. Reserve transport and accommodation early, and confirm meals and tours for the exact holiday days.

How Much Does 10 Days in Vietnam Cost?

There is no useful universal total without your dates, room requirements and flight origin. Build a quote using the actual structure:

Cost itemQuantity or question
International flightsOpen-jaw versus return, including any repositioning
Domestic flightsTwo tickets per person, with required bags
AccommodationNine nights; compare total room cost for your party
Airport transfersHanoi arrival/departure, two Da Nang legs, HCMC arrival/departure
Day tripsNinh Binh and Mekong; shared versus private
Daily spendingFood, drinks, local rides and admissions
Other essentialsVisa if required, insurance, connectivity and contingency

Budget travelers can prioritize simple rooms and shared excursions. Comfortable mid-range travel may mean quieter rooms, better flight times and smaller groups. Higher-end spending often goes into accommodation and private flexibility, not additional destinations.

Request comparable inclusions and cancellation conditions. Divide shared room and vehicle costs between travelers before comparing per-person totals. Holiday airfares and room availability can change the budget more than a few inexpensive meals save.

What to Eat Along the Route

Use meals to explore without adding transfers: pho, bun cha and egg coffee in Hanoi; regional rice dishes in Ninh Binh; cao lau in Hoi An; com tam, hu tieu and banh mi in Ho Chi Minh City; and a family-style southern lunch on the Mekong excursion.

Tell tour organizers about allergies and dietary requirements before departure. Ask specifically about sauces and stocks rather than relying on a dish name. The Vietnamese coffee guide can turn your café breaks into another thread connecting the journey.

What to Pack

Bring comfortable walking shoes, light clothing, a compact rain layer, sun protection and clothing suitable for temple visits. Add proper layers for northern winter rather than packing only for tropical afternoons.

Keep luggage manageable for two flights. Check each airline’s allowance, carry essentials separately and plan laundry during the longer HCMC stay. The dry-season packing list is a starting point; adapt it to all three regions and your month.

Visa & Airport Planning

Before non-refundable bookings, check your passport’s applicable entry conditions, validity requirements and whether you need a visa. Use the Vietnam Visa Exemption guide and e-visa application walkthrough, then verify through the official e-visa portal. Allow extra time around holidays; working days are not calendar days.

Airport update, checked 31 October 2026: a government report dated 30 October says Long Thanh is expected to begin operations on 24 December 2026. This is a planned opening, not confirmation that your flight will use it.

Check both your domestic arrival and international departure tickets for airport and terminal, and reconfirm after schedule changes. Do not assume Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh are interchangeable or book a tight self-connection between them.

For a Tan Son Nhat ticket, read the airport-to-city transfer guide. For HCMC airport-transfer help, send Fito your flight number, date, airport and accommodation so the correct pickup can be assessed and quoted.

Common First-Time Mistakes

  1. Turning nine nights into five or six hotel bases.
  2. Adding both Sa Pa and Ha Giang to a national route.
  3. Including Ninh Binh and Ha Long without removing anything.
  4. Adding Hue between already busy transfer days.
  5. Flying to Phu Quoc for one night.
  6. Treating flight duration as total travel time.
  7. Booking a full excursion immediately after international arrival.
  8. Scheduling a distant tour before the departure flight.
  9. Packing more than you can comfortably move.
  10. Ignoring regional weather, Tet and public holidays.

Fito’s Local Tips for Your First 10 Days

  • Keep three bases unless a particular experience justifies another.
  • Ask what a tour removes as well as what it includes.
  • Give Hanoi and HCMC time beyond their headline sights.
  • Book flight times that protect sleep when possible.
  • Keep transfer-day dinners close to your accommodation.
  • Choose your own pace over a tour’s longest attraction list.
  • Save the correct pickup pin offline before each excursion.
  • Leave Day 9 open until you know what you want more of.

FAQ

Is 10 days enough for Vietnam?

Yes, for an introduction across three regions. It is not enough for every famous destination, and arrival and departure count toward the ten days.

What is a good first-time Vietnam itinerary?

Hanoi, a Ninh Binh day trip, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and a Mekong day trip offer a balanced introduction with three hotel bases.

Should I travel north to south or south to north?

Either works. Choose according to international fares, season and holiday timing, preferably arriving and departing at opposite ends.

Is Ninh Binh or Ha Long better for ten days?

Ninh Binh simplifies this route. Choose Ha Long if an overnight cruise matters more to you, then rebuild Day 4 around a safe connection.

Should I include Hoi An?

It gives this route a distinct Central Vietnam heritage stop. Replace it if weather, accessibility or personal interests favor another plan.

Can I include Hue?

Yes, preferably as a replacement for Hoi An with revised transport, rather than an extra hotel stop.

Can I visit Phu Quoc in ten days?

Yes, if you remove a substantial section and allow several nights. Confirm the island’s onward flight arrangements before committing.

Should I include Sa Pa or Ha Giang?

Only if mountains become a main priority. Allow several days and reduce the rest of the route accordingly.

Is one day enough for the Mekong Delta?

It is enough for a Ben Tre-area introduction. Can Tho and Cai Rang work better with an overnight stay.

How many domestic flights does this route need?

Two: Hanoi–Da Nang and Da Nang–the HCMC region. A return international ticket or beach addition may require more.

How much does ten days cost?

Price nine accommodation nights, two domestic flights, transfers, two excursions and daily spending, then add international flights and other essentials. Dates and travel style determine the total.

Is this itinerary suitable during Tet?

It can be adapted, but transport, availability and local opening patterns need date-specific checks. Fewer moves around the main holiday days usually help.

Is This the Right 10-Day Vietnam Itinerary for You?

This 10-day Vietnam itinerary suits travelers who want culture, food, countryside and three regional perspectives. Couples can keep the core route; solo travelers can choose shared excursions when useful without committing to group travel throughout.

For families or slower travelers, remove one or both day trips. Another nine-night arrangement is Hanoi three nights, Hoi An three and HCMC three, shifting the southbound flight to Day 7 and dropping an excursion. Food-focused travelers can keep the cities and reduce scheduled sightseeing.

If your priorities are beaches, mountains or imperial history, replace a section with something you will value more. Ask Fito to plan your ten days around your flight dates, travel month, group and must-have experiences.

The aim is to come home remembering places and people, with enough time to notice them along the way.
